Bulgaria has a temperate climate, with cool and damp winters, very hot and dry summers, and Mediterranean influence along the Black Sea coast. Bulgaria comprises portions of the regions known in classical times as Moesia, Thrace, and Macedonia. Bulgaria has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years. Bulgaria became one of the first European countries to develop serial production of personal computers (Pravetz series 8.) in the beginning of the 1980s, and has experience in pharmaceutical research and development. Bulgaria’s military is currently undergoing an ambitious restructuring program aimed to bring the army up to NATO standards and modernize equipment. Bulgaria, situated in the eastern Balkans, has spectacular mountains and a Black Sea coastline, as well as a history going back to the 7th century. The barrier effect of the Balkan Mountains influences climate throughout the country: northern Bulgaria gets slightly cooler and receives more rain than the southern regions. The biggest uprising occurred under the leadership of Peter II Delyan, (proclaimed Emperor of Bulgaria in Belgrade in 1040). After its defeat in the Second Balkan War, Bulgaria lost considerable territory conquered in the first war, as well as Southern Dobrudzha and parts of the region of Macedonia. Since gaining total independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, Bulgaria has functioned as a minor European power, frequently included in plans and wars of the Great Powers. A number of ancient civilizations, most notably the Thracians, Greeks, Romans, Slavs, and Bulgars, have left their mark on the culture, history and heritage of Bulgaria.

Sofia

The largest centres include Sofia, Plovdiv and the surrounding area, Botevgrad, Stara Zagora, Varna, Pravets and many other cities. Plovdiv is a legendary city and the second biggest after Sofia, visit the old and rich of history part of Plovdiv, and drop by the Roman theater. The primary trains from Bucharest to Sofia, and back, run twice daily through the border city of Ruse. Tourism is a real growth industry here, and Europeans frequent the beautiful city of Sofia, the numerous historic sites, as well as the resorts and spas on the Black Sea coast. Jewish refugees came to Bulgaria from Bavaria, which had banished them in 1470, and, according to various travelers, Judeo-German was heard for a long time in the streets of Sofia. Next to Bulgaria’s parliament building in Sofia lies a trapezoidal bronze plaque on a granite base that serves to commemorate the non-Jewish Bulgarians and parliamentarians who worked to stop the deportation of 8,500 Bulgarian Jews to Nazi concentration camps.

Government

The Bulgarian judicial system became an independent branch of the government following passage of the 1991 constitution. A new UDF government, led by Prime Minister Ivan Kostov, was elected in 1997 to overhaul the economic system and institute reforms aimed at stemming corruption. Natural resources such as coal, copper, and zinc play an important role, and the economy has benefited from significant economic policy reform since the fall of the socialist government in 1996. The Benefactor Foundation presented the US Government and US Agency for International Development with a 2005 Benefactor of Bulgaria Award for assistance and support to the Bulgarian people during the floods of 2005.
