Early records inform us that the city of Sofia as we know it today was known as Serdica. People from this region are supposed to be related to the Thracian Serdi tribe. Other names for Sofia have been known to be Triaditsa and Serdets. This central Balkan city, located in west Bulgaria, happens to be a lovely pristine spot practically hemmed in by verdurous mountains. To get into the city you need to get through three mountain passes. Several low rivers criss-cross the city including the Perlovska and the Vladaya that later merges with the Iskar River flowing nearby.

Most visitors, on gaining entry into Sofia, are left speechless thanks to the gorgeous mountain ridges, crags and cliffs. Against the velvety green and undulating landscape nestle houses with turreted rooftops making the Bulgarian capital look even more picturesque.

There are plenty of places to stay in at Sofia thanks to a proliferation of hotels, inns, and hostels. For those looking to sample a high living standard during their stay, there are five star hotels’ galore. Those seeking a convenient location need to look no further than the Sofia Sheraton which is an old building converted into a five star luxury hotel. Most tourists prefer this five star hotel over others in view of its proximity to the National Opera, Saint Sofia Church, National Theatre, The Central Baths etc.

And if you are looking for something a little more exotic, then try the luxury hotel Hilton Sofia with a glass rooftop through which you will be able to contemplate the stars! All the guest rooms in this luxury hotel have internet access, an in-room safe, mini-bar, tea and coffee-making facilities, satellite and pay TV, etc.

Besides, there are quite a few other five star luxury hotels such as the Rodina, Holiday Inn Sofia, and Best Western to pick from.

Taking a walk around the city you will come to realize that Sofia is a place of churches, monasteries and ancient buildings. Not too far from the five star hotel Sofia Sheraton stands the Church of Saint Sofia (known as Tsurka Sveta Sofia in the local language). This is the oldest Eastern Orthodox Church in all of Sofia and has been built on the site of several ancient places of worship, even an old Roman theatre.

If you go into the Presidency yard you’ll come across the oldest architectural structure in the city, St. George Rotonda. The monument that was erected during the fourth century has served variously as a baptistery, church, a mosque, and church over time.

Apart from churches and museums, Sofia is also famous for its natural beauty. A stroll up and down Vitosha Street (named after Vitosha Mountain) reveals as much. You can stop by and buy some rare antiques such as Old Bulgarian swords and medals. It is a good idea to have a local to do the bargaining for you so you don’t end up getting ripped off.

Once again, not too far from the Sheraton is the famous TZUM Mall, a capitalist remnant of the communist era where you can buy almost everything.

Sofia is Europe’s second oldest capital city and 7000 years of history have shaped it a very unique way. Currently, it’s by far one of Europe’s most picturesque cities and its close proximity to Mount Vitosha makes the scenery even more gorgeous. Sofia is a cool and thriving city and here you can have a real on-budget stag do in Europe.

Sofia offers great value for money, an extensive selection of outdoor challenges to keep you busy throughout the daytime and a vibrant nightlife scene that revolves around the numerous bars and nightclubs. Day or evening, the many bars and cafés scattered throughout the city are rammed, condensing a mixed clientele of local crowd, ex-pats, staggers and the usual profusion of gorgeous girls.

If you’re searching for some shelter from the noise and lots of people, there are a number parks in the city that are worth strolling. The two main parks in Sofia are the Boris Gardens, located close to the Sofia University main building and the South Park, which starts just behind the Palace of Culture and the “Earth and Men” Museum, streaming almost as far as the foothills of Vitosha Mountain. Both parks have a number cafés and small beer stands offering refreshments.

Modern Bulgarian cuisine is a unique combination of original, European and Oriental cooking tradition, so both classic and international restaurants in Sofia offer an extensive selection of delicious specialties. If you’d like to taste some typical Bulgarian food then you must attempt monastery gyuvetch, a sort of hearty stew, laden with history, banitza, a cheesy pastry based snack and of course the infamous kavarma kebap.

Another reason for Sofia’s popularity with stag nights is that the food and drinking is very cheap. If you limit to the local beer (Zagorka), wines and spirits you can get a large round of drinks for under a fiver, saving more money for other pleasures. You must without doubt attempt the local Bulgarian Rakia, a strong alcoholic beverage, made from many fruits like plums, grapes, apricots, pears and figs.

The main area for the nightlife scene buzz streams along Vitosha alley and many bars are open for 24 hours. Some of the most popular spots include Stateside and beer Hall Schweik in the cities commercial district. At evening, there are lots of students heading off to the bars and nightclubs, many of which are hidden behind old, Soviet-era dorms and simply recognised by the word of mouth.

Sofia provides a thrilling experience and never allows a dull moment for a stag do in Bulgaria. It is a place of contrasts, where East meets West and where old meets the new. It is a fascinating place to head to and one that rewards staggers with magnificent sights of a great place.

Chillisauce is a business specialising in custom made stag night packages. All our Sofia stag parties include a wide variety of accommodation, activities such as karting, quad biking, zorbing, meals, club tickets and transport.

Even the briefest sightseeing tour of Sofia will invariably include the 4th century St.George Rotunda – major monument of Roman architecture, the St. Sophia early Christian basilica which gave the city its name and is depicted in the city’s coat of arms, the spectacular Alexander Nevsky memorial Cathedral with its gilded domes and dazzling interior with murals, icons and mosaics. The small Boyana Church included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage for its murals, genuine masterpieces painted by an unknown artist in 1259, complete the picture.

Sofia, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Bulgaria, is one of the oldest capital cities in Europe. Its history dates back to the 8th century, when the Thracians came and established a settlement in the city. It is located in the western region of the country and has a population of 1,270,450; making it the 14th largest city in the European Union. It is also the administrative, economic, educational and cultural centre of the country. The city gets its name from The Church of St. Sophia, which was constructed by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the middle of the 6th century. The official language of Sofia is Bulgarian.

Geography

Situated in western Bulgaria at the northern foot of the Vitosha Mountain, Sofia is surrounded on all sides by mountains. With an area of 457.9 sq miles (1,186 sq. kilometres), the Sofia Valley is the largest one in the country. It has an average altitude of 1,804 feet (550 metres) and is traversed by three mountain passes that connect the Aegean and Black Seas with Central Europe and the Adriatic Sea.

The city of Sofia lies about 34 miles (55 kms) from Katlonia on the Serbian border; 114 miles (183 kms) from Kulata on the Greek border and 70 miles (113 kms) from Gruyesevo, on the frontier with the Republic of Macedonia.

Several low rivers cross the sea, including the Perlovska and the Vladavska. The upper course of the Iskar River flows in close proximity to eastern Sofia. The city has long been renowned for its several natural thermal and mineral springs. Artificial lakes/dams were constructed sometime in the last century.

Climate

Sofia enjoys a moderate continental climate, with average annual temperatures of around 0.5 C (1F). August is the hottest month, but it is still cooler than other parts of Bulgaria because of the high altitude valley it is located in. Sofia is coldest in January.

Culture

This ancient city blends its past and present in an extraordinary architectural style. Some of the major historical landmarks include the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, which is one of the largest Orthodox churches; the 10th century Boyana Church, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage protected sites and the early Byzantine Church of St. Sophia. Sofia is a see of a Roman Catholic diocese as well as an Eastern Orthodox dicese. Some of the more modern architecture includes the Rakovski Str theatre district, the Bulgarian National Opera and Ballet; the NDK, the largest congressional and cultural centre in Southeast Europe and the Slaveykov Square’s outdoor book market.

Nightlife in Sofia

Sofia has an exciting nightlife and every night in this city is a stimulating experience with numerous jazz and rock clubs; concerts, operas, pubs, live venues, piano bars, restaurants and ‘mehani, Bulgarian traditional taverns. Variety shows are held all night at the classy night clubs and casinos stay open till dawn. For disco-lovers, Sofia offers plenty to look forward to.

Facilities

Sofia offers its residents and tourists a rich choice of Operas, concert halls, theatres, galleries and museums. The city also offers businesses several outstanding opportunities for hosting symposia, conferences and business meetings as well as international congresses. Several state-of-the-art business centres are in close proximity of the lively city centre.

Bulgaria’s capital city of Sofia has been around for quite a while. Depending upon who you believe, it was established anywhere between 7,000 and 3,000 years ago by ancient Thracians. What is agreed is that it was the thermal springs that proved the big attraction and led to the development of a thriving metropolis. At 1804ft above sea level the climate tends to moderately hot summers and cold, snowy winters providing great summer sun, pleasurable city breaks and numerable ski opportunities depending upon when you visit. As you would expect from such an ancient city there is a plethora of old buildings and cultural points of interest smattered around Sofia. Whether it is the architecture, museums or the pleasures offered by a modern city that you are after, you’ll find them all in abundance in sparkling Sofia.

Vibrant nightlife is alive and well in Sofia. Although the majority of Sofians don’t boast massive incomes they still love to party! As a result there are a number of great pubs and cafes dotted throughout the city catering to a wide range of tastes and interests. For example, find yourself in Sofia at the time your favourite football team is playing an important game and you needn’t miss it, head for Murphy’s Irish Bar and catch all the action! And the handful of 24 hour restaurants that operate in the city centre provide respite if you are out between 1.00 and 5.00 a.m. and find that the great public transport system has closed down for the evening! While in Sofia, do as the Sofians do, and drink in the bars until midnight, then head off to the nightclub; there are plenty about that offer a wide range of dance and music styles.

Churches and other religious buildings proliferate in the city, particularly ancient and neo-Byzantine Orthodox churches, despite the fact that the majority of buildings are built post 1945, due to the battering the city took during World War 2. At the end of that conflict Bulgaria came under the control of the communist bloc and Stalinist style utilitarian apartments and factories were built at such a pace that the city expanded into new suburbs and attracted many workers from rural areas. But, don’t be put off, in the city centre itself you will still find tree-lined avenues with charming little side streets that feature cafes and vast bazaars. There is a relaxed ambience and you’ll often find the charming sight of Bulgarian gypsies playing their fiddles on street corners.

Lying in the shadow of Mount Vistosha, there are plenty of winter ski and other summer recreational opportunities throughout the year, such as hiking, around Sofia. The city itself has undergone a transformation over the last ten years as it moves away from the communist influence and tries to establish itself as a modern European capital. You’ll find prices very reasonable in just about all aspects; from drinks to hotel rooms and including shopping! With over 300 bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants to choose from you’ll find Sofia a vibrant and lively city to visit.

Sofia has a huge nightlife scene with many different night clubs, live venues, pubs, mehani (Bulgarian traditional taverns), and restaurants. Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe with ruins spread across the city center. Sofia offers an excellent opportunities for international congresses, symposia, meetings, conferences and fairs. Sofia has a continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers. Besides the city of Sofia, the capital province encompasses three other cities and 34 villages, being split into a total of 24 municipalities. The architecture in Sofia centre is a unique mixture of Western and Central European Architecture. The Largo, an architectural complex in downtown Sofia which includes the headquarters of many national institutions.

After the abolishment of Communism in 1989, Sofia has witnessed the construction of whole business districts and neighbourhoods, as well as modern skryscraper-like glass-fronted office buildings, but also top-class residential neighbourhoods. Some of the biggest and most popular telecommunications companies, TV and radio stations, cable television companies, newspapers, magazines, and web portals are based in Sofia.

With buses going several times a day in all directions Sofia is well connected to all regions. To get around Sofia you can use several means of transport: public autobuses, some trolley lines, many tram lines, a subway line and private mini-buses (marshrutki). Just south of the city centre is the City Center Sofia mall which also has a big supermarket (a rarity is Sofia) in the basement, a cinema and an indoor climbing wall.

Plovdiv Bulgaria’s second largest city, an one-hours drive on a good highway away from Sofia, lies around three hills in the otherwise totally flat thracian plane. Most restaurants in Sofia serve European and Bulgarian cuisine.

Bulgaria

After a number of unsuccessful sieges, the city fell to the Byzantine Empire in 1018, but once again was incorporated into the restored Bulgarian Empire at the time of Tsar Ivan Asen I. Sofia was taken by Russian forces on 4 January 1878, during the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78, and became the capital of the autonomous Principality of Bulgaria in 1879, which became Kingdom of Bulgaria in 1908. Fuelled by Bulgaria’s sustained economic growth, the real estate market in Sofia has skyrocketed in recent years.

The decline of Sofia during the Turkish Ottoman Empire was followed by the rejuvenation after the Russian liberation in 1879, when Sofia was chosen as the capital of Bulgaria at the First National Constituent Assembly, and followed by a brisk and straight-forward period of construction. Sofia is the pearl of Bulgaria with its unique location near to skiing and beach resorts.

Bulgaria is a beautiful country located in the Eastern Europe on the western side of the black sea. The country is located in such a way that it is surrounded by Romania to the north, Greece to the south, Serbia to the North West, the Republic of Macedonia to the South west and Turkey to the south east. Since Bulgaria is close to Turkish straits means the key land routes from Middle East to Europe and Asia pass through Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is a very lovely country you are locked in magnetism once you see the sheer beauty of this country. For accommodation point of view you Bulgaria hotels are available in cheaper rates as well as at economical prices. Hotels in Bulgaria are available in cheaper hotels, discounted hotels, budgeted hotels and luxurious hotels.

Attractions in Bulgaria

• There are many attractions in Bulgaria that are fascinating aspects like the Dead Sea an ideal destination for people in summers. People can soak up the sun and enjoy the azure blue water of the sea. As well as the mountains such as Pirin, Rila, Balkan and Rodopa are the winter destinations but can still be visited in summers as the proper hill destination.
• You can also go to the capital Sofia and enjoy while seeing all the tourists attractions by seeing there. For example St. Alexander Nevski, the central universal shop and the parliament.
• Plovdiv is a renowned city and dotted with Roman theatre serving as a background.
• Every traveler should visit Rila Monastery it is a state of the art beauty. The northern sides of Bulgaria are dominated with rich agricultural fields. That looks very picturesque.
• While in the northern side of Bulgaria you can see the old capital of Bulgaria that is Veliko Tarnovo which is a must sight to visit if you are exploring the historical aspects of Bulgaria. All inclusive hotels are present in Bulgaria and it is up to tourists to decide in which hotel to go for.
• Rozhen Monastery: There is bus service from Melnik then about 800m walk to reach Rozhen village. The tourists visiting hours are 07:00 to 21:00.This top of hill monastery was constructed during the 13th century but most of the monastery was completed during the 18th century. People here seek for solace and peace that is barely found in today’s cities.

If you do not understand or speak the language you can very well look for a restaurant as by looking the sign of”PECTOPAHT” sign. You can be an adventurous and look for food and dessert that is not been tasted and eaten by you before. Even though figuring out the menu would still be an adventure in itself. But sometimes basically in tourist areas there is a bit difference the menu card rather the dishes names are deciphered into English so that the tourists will not face any problem in reading out the dish’s ingredients.
