The current low level of property prices in Bulgaria, along with its fast-growing economy and the extensive inward investment it is attracting, combine to make the Bulgarian housing market one of Europe’s most bullish opportunities. However, it is not only the low prices that are attracting investors. The tourist potential, as well – [Photograph by Nick Hutt ]- as Bulgaria’s recent entry into the European Union, indicates significant price growth in the future and so makes Bulgaria a compelling choice for the property investor.
The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) describes Bulgaria as one of the most appealing ‘new faces’ in the tourism industry today. The WTO also makes bold predictions for tourism figures, predicting in excess of 20 million tourists annually visiting Bulgaria by 2010, making it one of the world’s greatest emerging markets. This has obvious positive repercussions for the investment market. Statistics gathered by the National Statistical Institute (NSI) of Bulgaria shows that between 2000 and 2004 the country saw a 70% increase in foreign visitors (with a 90% increase from EU visitors), including a rise of 20% in 2002 when other, traditionally popular, destinations were suffering a drastic downtown in numbers. Visits to Bulgaria by foreign tourists rose steadily from January to September 2006, according to the NSI, generating increasing demand for rental properties in the country. A combination of well-developed and constantly expanding summer resorts, first-rate ski resorts with guaranteed winter snowfall, and opportunities for city breaks ensure a solid and sustained growth in visitor numbers.

The fascinating remains of what many now believe to be the Temple of Dionysus, are perched high on a hill top in the Eastern Rhodope mountain range, around 15 kilometres or so from the town of Kardzhali. Currently the archaeological remains are still a work in progress and you approach the gravel car park up a dirt track. When visited in October 2005, it was free to walk around the ruins, but a charge of a few Lev was to be shortly introduced.Â

From the car park it is a steep scramble up a rough stony track that winds its way around the side of the hill until you reach the base of the ˜temple road’. This in itself is a magnificent insight into just what was achieved here. The ˜road’ is actually a passageway carved out of the rock. It climbs steeply up towards one of the main entrances to the temple some 200 feet or so higher up. Huge steps have been carved out of the base of the passageway to make the climb easier to negotiate as you make your way up, hemmed in by walls of stone rising over 20 feet on each side of you. The passageway ends at the fortress wall surrounding most of the temple on the top of the hill. You are then free to scramble around the remains of the temple and the palace, exploring the many rooms and chambers that once formed one of the most important places of worship and rule in the area. However, Bourgas airport transfers are the best, most reliable and convenient mode of transportation with sound knowledge of place. Tese taxi and shuttle services can be booked in advance while planning your trip. One must not get ripped off with yellow Bourgas taxis as you pay twice more when booking direct with most transfer companies.
